Medical tourism in Istanbul: a practical guide for international patients

Many international patients travel to Istanbul for treatment they could have at home, most often because of cost and waiting times. Done well, it is a straightforward, well-supported experience. Done carelessly, it can go wrong. This guide is about doing it well.

Why Istanbul

Three things make the city work for medical travel. There is specialisation: many clinics focus on hair, dental and aesthetic treatment and perform it routinely. There is cost: local prices are often considerably lower than in the UK, Europe or North America, largely because staff, facilities and living costs are lower. And there is infrastructure: authorised facilities, English-speaking coordinators and hotels used to recovering guests, often arranged as one trip — so check exactly what each quote includes.

How to choose a clinic — the decision that matters most

Almost everything that goes wrong in medical tourism traces back to the choice of clinic. Before anything else, satisfy yourself on these points:

• Who performs the procedure? Licensed medical professionals, in a facility authorised by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Health — and you should know who your surgeon or dentist is before you travel.
• Is there a written plan, or just a cash figure? A documented plan, an itemised written quote and receipted payments are basic signs of a serious clinic.

• What happens afterwards? Aftercare and a reachable coordinator are part of the treatment, not extras.

Understanding the cost

It is reasonable to ask why treatment costs so much less here. The honest answer is local economics — wages, rent, laboratory and facility costs are lower, and the exchange rate widens the gap — not a compromise on the specialists, materials or equipment, which are the same used in good clinics elsewhere. When you compare quotes, compare like with like: a quote that covers treatment, hotel, transfers, host and aftercare is very different from a headline figure that excludes them. Always get the price and its exclusions in writing before you commit.

Visas and getting there

Visa rules depend on your nationality and can change, so check the official e-visa portal of the Republic of Türkiye (evisa.gov.tr) and your own government's travel advice before booking; a reputable clinic will provide an invitation letter if you need one. Istanbul has two airports — Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side — and a good clinic arranges private transfers from whichever you use.

Is it safe?

Istanbul is a well-established destination for international patients, and the infrastructure around medical travel is mature. As in any major city, the usual sensible precautions apply, and your coordinator should be reachable throughout your stay. The meaningful safety question is not the country but the clinic — which is why clinic selection is the longest section of this guide.

Good treatment abroad does not end when you leave the clinic. Whether it is a hair transplant maturing over twelve months, veneers that need routine care, or a rhinoplasty settling over a year, the clinic should stay reachable and follow up at defined intervals. Before you travel, confirm who you contact once you are home and what is covered.

Red flags to avoid

• Cash-only requests, or pressure to pay the full amount up front
• Pressure to decide immediately, or prices that seem too good to be true
• No named surgeon or dentist, and no facility details
• No written plan, no itemised price, and no clear aftercare

A clinic that is transparent on all of these is telling you something important about how it works.
