What a dental implant is

An implant is a small titanium (or titanium-alloy) post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Because it is anchored in bone, it looks, feels and functions much like a natural tooth.

A single missing tooth is replaced with one implant and a crown. Several missing teeth can be restored with an implant-supported bridge. When most or all of a jaw is missing or failing, a full-arch solution restores the whole row.

All-on-4 and All-on-6 explained

All-on-4 and All-on-6 restore a complete arch of teeth on four or six implants respectively, angled to make the most of available bone. In many cases a fixed temporary set of teeth can be placed soon after surgery, so you are not left without teeth, with the final prosthesis fitted once healing is complete. The timeline: why implants often mean two trips

This is the part patients most need to plan for. Because osseointegration takes roughly three to six months, implant treatment is usually staged: on the first visit the implants are placed (often with immediate temporary teeth); after healing, the final teeth are fitted, which may mean a second trip a few months later. Some cases can be handled differently, but be wary of any promise of permanent full-arch teeth completed in a couple of days — an honest clinic explains the healing time rather than glossing over it.

What drives the cost

The main factors are the number of implants, whether bone grafting is needed, the type of final prosthesis, and the implant system used.
